I have been hearing debate at my gun club regarding when a trapshooter on a post is allowed to close his/her action with a live shell in the gun. I checked the ATA Safety Rules and found that a trapshooter shall place a live shell in his/her gun when on a post facing the traps. Does this also imply that the trapshooter can also close his/her action? Basically, my question is, can a trapshooter on a post facing the traps have a live shell in his/her gun with the action closed even if it is not that trapshooter's turn to shoot?

Please advise.  Thank you.

The official ATA Rule is on Page 16 of the Rule Book.

12. A contestant shall place a live shell in his/her gun only when on a post

facing the traps. In Singles and Handicap shooting he/she may place

only one (1) live shell in his/her gun at a time and must remove it or

the empty shell(s) before moving from one post to another. In Doubles

shooting he/she may place two (2) live shells in his/her gun at a time

and must remove both live or empty shells before moving from one (1)

post to another. In changing from one (1) post to another, the shooter

shall not walk in front of the other competitors.

It is not against the ATA Rules at an ATA Registered Shoot for a contestant to place a live shell in the chamber and close the gun even though it is Not his/her turn to shoot.

Having stated the above rule I personally do Not close my break open gun until it is my turn to shoot.  I have shot Trap since 1961 and I close my gun as I am bringing it up to my shoulder and no one has ever accused me of being too slow.  To me it is obvious that is a safer procedure to wait until it is your turn than to close the gun ahead of time.  Whenever I am teaching Juniors or new shooters I show them what I personally do.  The official ATA Rule on this topic was in the book long before the advent of microphones to trigger the target. It is not an uncommon occurrence for someone closing their gun to have the sensitive microphone deliver a target accidentally.  Gun Club management may enforce their own Rules at any practice or non Registered Shoot.  For a League Shoot or a Practice Session with shooters getting ready for the Hunting Season it is a good idea for Club Management to insist on strict Safety Rules being followed.
